Meet Jess News Can you share a key milestone or achievement in your career? Managing Knightcorp’s rebrand last year was a defining moment in my career. It was a complex yet deeply rewarding project, as we sought to craft a brand that would propel Knightcorp into the future. This wasn’t just about a visual update; it was about reimagining what an insurance brokerage could be. We aimed to transform an antiquated industry by putting the customer at the centre of every interaction. Through innovative use of technology, expertise, and creative solutions, we’re working to make every touchpoint seamless and delightful—changing the game for our clients and our industry. (Standby for our epic website redevelopment launching May 2025) What challenges have you faced as a woman in your career, and how did you overcome them? For me, it comes down to the two Ps: Perception and Parental Leave. Perception: In my mid-20s, I was project managing my company’s presence at a trade show. Despite my leadership role, several delegates assumed I was part of the promotional team. Experiences like these remind me how much perception matters, but they also motivate me to keep challenging stereotypes. Parental Leave: While Australia has made strides towards more equitable parental leave, challenges persist. Taking time out of the workforce can pause your career trajectory, and part-time roles can limit opportunities for advancement. Additionally, the default expectation of mothers as primary caregivers places a disproportionate burden on women when returning to work. Despite these hurdles, I’m optimistic about the future. Australia’s recent rise in the global gender equity rankings—from 44th to 24th—signals progress. More businesses are recognising the value of equitable paid parental leave, with two-thirds now offering leave beyond the government standard. What skills or traits do you think are essential for success in this industry? Vision and execution: In an industry that’s slow to evolve, you need the ability to see what’s possible, devise a strategy to get there, and execute it effectively. My pitch to every contractor is simple: “Knightcorp is to insurance what Airbnb is to hotels and Uber is to taxis. We’re reimagining the industry.” Leadership: The ability to inspire and bring out the best in people is essential. The right leadership creates teams that are collaborative, innovative, and ready to tackle challenges head-on. People are the make and break of every business – ensuring their performing at their best is everything. What advice would you give to other women starting their careers in insurance or business? Kindness is not a weakness. See the good in others, stay curious, and help those around you rise to their potential. A great team allows everyone to succeed, and lifting others up ultimately elevates the entire organisation. Who is a woman that has inspired you, and why? Liz Wiseman, founder of Multipliers, has been a huge inspiration. Her framework for unlocking the genius in others deeply resonates with me. I’ve experienced firsthand how transformative it is when someone sees your potential and believes in your strengths—it’s when I’ve truly shone. My goal is to bring out that same brilliance in those around me. How do you balance your career with other aspects of your life? I thrive on staying active. Surfing, swimming, bike riding, gym workouts, and the occasional tennis match are non-negotiables in my daily routine. These activities energise me, boost my focus, and make me more productive. By prioritising exercise, I’ve found a balance that works for both my personal and professional life. What does International Women’s Day mean to you? International Women’s Day is vital because awareness is the first step toward advocacy. During my time at Growth Faculty, I gained a deeper understanding of the gender inequities that persist in Australia. With that knowledge, I’ve been inspired to take action and contribute to meaningful change. How can businesses like Knightcorp support gender equality and women in the workplace? As forerunners in our industry I think it’s critical that Knightcorp not only keep pace but lead the charge in creating a truly equitable workplace where all employees can thrive. It’s worth taking note of the actions that are leaders in diversity and inclusion. Some measures include: Equitable Parental Leave: Offering generous paid leave and flexible return-to-work programs for all genders. Pay Equity: Conducting pay gap audits and implementing transparent salary bands. Leadership Development: Establishing mentorship programs and leadership training for women to encourage equal gender participation in the highest ranks Flexible Work Policies: Supporting remote work, flexible hours, and part-time options. Tackling Bias: Providing unconscious bias training and reviewing policies to eliminate biases. Support Networks: Creating employee resource groups for women and allies. Well-being: Promoting mental health support, work-life balance, and wellness initiatives. Tracking Goals: Setting measurable gender equality goals and regularly reporting progress.
