Meet Anna

As part of our International Women’s Day series, we’re celebrating the incredible women across our team. Meet Anna Fennell from our Corporate team in Sydney, whose kindness, determination and drive make her someone who naturally champions those around her.

Anna's Reflection

  • Tell us about a moment when you stepped out of your comfort zone at work that resulted in a memorable achievement.
    • In my early career, working for an insurer and processing Letters of Authority, I suspected a broker was forging ‘client’ signatures to access their policies, not only breaching client confidentiality but breaching GDPR regulation. Although I was new to the job (and the insurance world) and understood the implications if I was incorrect in my claim, I reported it nonetheless and after some investigations, it was discovered I was correct. Not only did it teach me the importance of ‘attention to detail’ but advocating for clients and speaking up when you think something’s wrong, something that has really stuck with me throughout my entire career and remains unchanged.

  • In the spirit of “Balancing the Scales,” what is one unwritten barrier you encountered and how did you navigate it?
    • The insurance industry heavily leans on ‘networking’ and has traditionally happened on a golf course (a lot still does). For me, golf is not a strength! Understanding that building relationships shouldn’t be forced was a huge turning point in my career, and instead of signing up for golf lessons, I pivoted to find groups or environments that could curate authentic relationships, which has actually yielded far better results. Now I don’t worry about where a stray golf ball has gone and I can lean into conversations comfortably and authentically.

  • What’s an interesting challenge or ‘puzzle’ you get to solve in your role?
    • The main challenge is keeping up with advancements in the digital economy and the evolving risk landscape. Who would have thought 20 years ago, that today the risk of cyber threats would far exceed traditional theft? And in the current ‘post-covid’ world, the marketplace for some businesses has no geographical limitations. For me, it’s trying to keep up with this evolution, keep informed and educated, and ensuring our client’s protection is as modern as their business model.

  • If you could go back to your first day in your career, what three words of encouragement would you give yourself?
    • Just be yourself

  • What is an underrated skill essential for long-term success in this industry?
    • Empathy. It might sound 'left field' for a high-pressure environment, but we often meet clients during their most challenging times and being able to take a step back and bring calm to a chaotic situation is essential. Whether I’m discussing renewals with clients, negotiating with underwriters or supporting a colleague, I try to make every interaction positive and reassuring. We only see a small snippet of someone’s day; making that moment a good one is key to long-term success.

  • Name a woman you admire and take inspiration from, and why.
    • It’s a cliché for a reason, but my mother is my greatest inspiration. It wasn’t until my 20s that I realized the scale of what she’s achieved. Working full-time as a nurse while raising four daughters with very little support in the early days and in the later days supporting her aging parents. She ensured we had every opportunity, from education to hobbies and a good grip on life. She’s also the reason I have a dual Irish/Australian passport, so I literally wouldn't be where I am today without her - thanks Mam!

  • What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
    • I am fortunate to be surrounded by powerhouse women: three inspiring older sisters, a mother who worked tirelessly, and a network of ambitious colleagues and supportive, talented friends. This day is all about celebrating them; their characters, their strength, their achievements!
